The Color Purple

images (1)Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Alice Walker. I watched this film again recently. I had first watched it when I was very young and not really appreciated it. But having watched it again I was going to say I enjoyed it but probably isn’t the right choice of words – I appreciated it. Whoopi Goldberg’s first film. I saw her interviewed recently saying she had written to the author asking for a part in the film should it ever be made. The reply Whoopi received back was that the author had written for the part specifically for Whoopi. It’s a hard film to watch as you realise that this sort of life really happened! But sometimes it’s good to be reminded of that. Oprah Winfrey is wonderful in the film. The Colour Purple was nominated for eleven Oscars. The film was co-produced by Quincy Jones, who also wrote the score. My partner loves the film! {extravote 44}
Aimee And Jaguar Director: Max Farberbock * Runtime: 125 minutes1999  This film is based on the war memoirs of Lilly Wust (the Aimme character) set in 1943. Lilly is a married lady with four children and a husband away at the war. Her world is turned upside down when she receives a letter from Jaguar whom she assumes is a man. The two fall madly in love. Lilly wants to divorce her husband which causes a terrible storm not just because her lover is a woman but because she is Jewish and fighting for the Resistance. But nothing stops the love-blind Lilly. The two women make a pact of love and marriage and try to block out the reality of war and persecution. A great film, very moving and all the more so as it is based on a true story that Lilly shared with a young writer.
