gigola_deWe meet Gigola and her lover at the start of the film declaring their undying love for each other, then fast forward to a few months later and her partner has committed suicide, thus changing Gigola forever. The innocent young girl is replaced by the lover who walks the streets of Paris, rescuing girls from their pimps, seducing lonely older rich ladies, drinking far too much and driving beautiful cars, whilst also spending her evening with the other lesbians of Paris in 1963 at the Chez Moune, who never cease to be shocked by her behavior

If you are a fan of european cinema then some of the players will be familiar to you, Rossy De Palma (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown), Eduardo Noriega (Open Your Eyes, The Devil’s Backbone), Marisa Paredes (All About My Mother, The Skin I Live In) Thierry Lhermitte (The Dinner Game), Marisa Berenson (I Am Love) and introducing Lou Doillon, daughter of Jane Birkin, as the eponymous Gigola.

It’s a quirky film, you really get a feel of the times and also of the emotions flowing through Gigiola as she trys in vain to subdue them after the loss of her partner. You revel in her rebelliousness and yearn to get to drive with her in that car across Paris at midnight! A great film and highly recommend it!

It is based on the long censored book of the same name…
