imagesLast year I read the book 2012 by Daniel Pinchbeck. It was a fascinating read about the prediction made by the Mayans that on 21 December 2012 a cataclysmic event will occur on earth, leading to the end of the world as we know.

If you are hoping that this is the movie about that book, think again. The movie only makes a passing reference to the Mayans. I really enjoyed the film, I am a big fan of John Cusack. I think he is a great actor and it was also great to see George Seagal. Check out ‘A Touch of Class’ starring him and Glenda Jackson, what a great film.

Anyway back to the movie in question, it is directed by the same chap that gave us ‘Godzilla’ and ‘The Day After Tomorrow’, which this film is in fact very similar to.

The film starts by introducing you to the fragmented family of John Cusack’s character. He is late to pick up his kids to take them on holiday, right from the start you know things aren’t quite as they should be when huge cracks appear in the roads from then on you have to hang on as its a bumpy ride. He takes his children to Yellow Stone Park for a camping trip where he meets an eccentric fellow played by Woody Harrleston who predicts the end of the world.

There follows some wonderful special effects, the usual government conspiracy, a great cast and two and a half hours of movie magic!

I said to Liz half way through they seem to have the luck of the Irish – going from one doomed moment to the next but miraculously managing to get past it. It’s a fun film in the old style of Saturday matinee fun but let us all hope that the Mayans got it wrong.
