The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister

helena-whitbread-secret-diaries-miss-anne-listerAs many a lesbian I am sure will admit up until this week I had never heard of Anne Lister! Sue Perkins said as much at the opening of her wonderful documentary on Anne that followed the BBC airing of this brilliant film! How is it that we all know about Vita Sackville West, Radclyffe Hall and so on but never a word spoken of Anne until this week! The book on Amazon is a sort after item and therefore well out of the average price range! Well, this film makes amends for that. We settled down to watch this, not realising what a treat lay before us. The film was very well made, encapsulated the story very well and put across Anne as a real person, foibles and all! There were a few love scenes that were delicately filmed. It is amazing and also great to know that the notion we lesbians of today are not all that different from those of our ancestors. As ever we just want to find true love and the ‘one’. I found it wonderful to learn that Anne had done just that and even managed to have their relationship blessed in a Church. Following on from this film was a great documentary from the wonderful Sue Perkins. An eloquent and inciteful look inside the world of Anne Lister. How people viewed her actions at the time and also a very unbiased perspective of Anne herself. Sue was as always intelligent and articulate with her thoughtful views on the subject! If you missed this it is still available on the BBC 1 player, but hurry only on for a few more days!
