Jan Walker, star of the new feature length documentary, Jan’s Coming Out was married for 23 years before discovering her true sexuality.  Like many women who ‘come out’ later in life, she didn’t feel comfortable visiting the gay scene, even though she was brave enough to venture out alone onto Manchester’s Canal Street.  Determined to find women like herself, she joined walking groups, dining groups, older women’s groups and signed up for the first of many, L Word Conventions, where she was first introduced to US lesbian travel company, Olivia. She signed up immediately for her first lesbian cruise as a solo traveller, a liberating and empowering experience. Seven months later, on her third Olivia cruise, she met filmmakers, Carolyn Reid and Alison Thompson, who were developing a celebratory, feel-good lesbian documentary. On their first meeting they knew Jan’s enthusiasm for all things lesbian would be a perfect anchor for the film and Jan’s Coming Out the movie, began.  Completed in 2011, Jan’s Coming Out, captures Jan’s colorful character as she interviews a host of lesbians and celesbians in a fun-filled entertaining documentary. Jan can even count Meredith Baxter as one of her friends since interviewing her for the film, prior to Oprah Winfrey’s one-hour special on Meredith’s own coming out. Their instant rapport stems from the shared experience of coming out later in life with grown up children.  

When not interviewing celesbians and lesbians, Jan is a trained physiotherapist, shiatsu and reiki master.  Since discovering her sexuality she has immersed herself into all things lesbian and is hoping to find the woman of her dreams to share her life with. Her chance meeting with the film-makers has changed her life and as one of the cast members pointed out, having a film made about you is not a bad chat up line either!

Living a comfortable and simple life with my soul mate

With friends, good food , wine ,great company and conversation

Whose life other than yours would you most like to have lived?

I am just discovering the real me now, so I shall want to live my own life to the fullest – nobody elses but mine as its all just begginning ! J
